Fast Track Pro - XLR inputs ok - no MIDI

Hi,
I have an M-Audio Fast Track Pro- running JACK everything has been ok recording from mic thru the XLR inputs, I wanted to try an old Yamaha PRS 290 in thru the MIDI but get nothing. I tried on a Windows machine running Ardour ALSA defaults and MIDI comes in fine. I tried a2j on the Linux box but still nothing. any ideas?
