When a fader (volume) is automated and automation set to play, the fader turns a lighter grey. Can I change the colour in the preferences>appearance>colours? I’d like it to be a bit more obvious… Thanks.

Alas, no. Currently this is hardcoded, a gray overlay with 40% transparency:
rgba = contrasting_text_color (rgba);
Gdk::Color text_color;
text_color.set_rgb ((rgba >> 24)*256, ((rgba & 0xff0000) >> 16)*256, ((rgba & 0xff00) >> 8)*256);
CairoWidget::set_source_rgb_a (cr, text_color, 1.);
pango_cairo_show_layout (cr, _layout->gobj());
cairo_restore (cr);
}
if (!get_sensitive()) {
Gtkmm2ext::rounded_rectangle (cr, CORNER_OFFSET, CORNER_OFFSET, w-CORNER_SIZE, h-CORNER_SIZE, CORNER_RADIUS);
cairo_set_source_rgba (cr, 0.505, 0.517, 0.525, 0.4);
cairo_fill (cr);
} else if (_hovering && CairoWidget::widget_prelight()) {
Gtkmm2ext::rounded_rectangle (cr, CORNER_OFFSET, CORNER_OFFSET, w-CORNER_SIZE, h-CORNER_SIZE, CORNER_RADIUS);
cairo_set_source_rgba (cr, 0.905, 0.917, 0.925, 0.1);
cairo_fill (cr);
}
}
void
ArdourFader::on_size_request (GtkRequisition* req)
Until this becomes themeable, the only way is to edit the source and recompile.

OK thanks. I also spotted the Fader Automation Mode and a bit more digging reveals this as Mixer Strip button which I can recolour so I’ll use that. Still finding my way!
