Error: Failed to register audio/midi ports

I’m using Ardour 9.2 with Windows 11. Each time I attempt to open a project, or start a new one, I get the following error message.

“Failed to register audio/midi ports”

Do you get the Audio/MIDI setup dialog when Ardour starts, where you can select which driver and device to use?
If so what settings did you select?
If not, you can open the dialog from the first selection under the Window menu to verify which audio device Ardour is attempting to use.

Yes, using the default settings.

I think the settings would be better thought of as “first device in the list that Windows presents as available” rather than “default.” At least in my experience the device at the top of the list is not usually the device I am actually using, so you should explicitly choose which device you want to use.

Were you able to successfully use your audio device by explicitly selecting the device you want in the setup dialog rather than using the first device in the list?

My device never shows up in the list. BTW, my device works perfectly
well with other software.

What device, and can you make a screenshot of the device list?

I thought you were referring to an audio device (hence my question about “which audio device Ardour is attempting to use.”)

Does the Advanced drop-down in Audio/MIDI setup show that MME driver is selected? On my Windows machine at least the only option is MME or none.

Where are you expecting your MIDI controller to show up? As far as I know MIDI controllers are only displayed in the MIDI Connections window (can be accessed under the Window menu).
My USB MIDI controller is displayed in the hardware tab of the sources list across the top of the window.
