Dragging regions across tracks without renaming?

Hi everyone,

whenever I drag a region from one track to another, Ardour appends a “.1” to the end of the region name. When I repeatedly drag the region across tracks, this number is incremented automatically. Even when I manually remove it from the end of the region name, it reappears as soon as I drag it to a different track again. So, three questions:

1. What’s the purpose of this behavior?
2. Is there any way to disable it so region names remain unchanged?
3. If not, could this be implemented in a future Ardour version?

I’m interested in this as well.

I can understand adding incremental numbers for new/different regions (-like if you divide a region up into several regions, etc.).

-But why does that number change at all when one simply moves a single region to and from tracks?

It’s a good question. I don’t think it is intended behavior. I’ll have a look at it before we release 9.0. Likely just a side effect of some other design choice.
