Dragging and Drop Plugin from Track to Track Does Not Copy All Settings

When dragging and dropping a plugin from one track to another, none of the settings are being copied over into the new plugin instance on the new track. Some settings are maxed out causing a painful audio blast! These were LV2 Plugins. File locations , IR Files in this case, are not being copied over as well. This was on Ubuntu 24.02 LTS. I also had some VST3 drag and copy issues in WIN10 earlier this week using Mixbus 32C V10.2.

Is this dependent on the the way the plugin was made ? Or is this Ardour’s (version 8.12 )fault ? ?

@x42 ?
@paul ?

Is this something that should be added to the tracker ? Or are the plugins likely needing work ?

It is odd since under the hood the same mechanism is used when saving plugin state with a session. Does save/re-load also loose settings?

Which plugins are affected by this? I did a quick test with x42 IR Convolver (LV2 + file) and VST3 Host Checker and those work fine.

Yes, that’s always a good idea.

I was using Ratatouile on Linux, Nerual Amp on Win. I gave up on the session and did not save it. One thing these had in common is that the .NAM and IR file were stored on another partition (NTFS), and no presets were saved… I opened the plugin, loaded my files, and then drag and dropped. Some knobs were maxed, file window on plugin showed a long winded ERROR message.

When I have some time, I will try in MB10 and Ardour 8.12 again. This is not the first time drag and drop has not functioned well.

I just tried on Mixbux32C V11 with Linux and all seemed good! I could not get this to happen again with multiple plugins. This is likely fixed in Ardour V9, or some weird computer anomaly.

@x42

This may be windows specific as I could not get it to fail on linux :

Right side was not a preset, loaded NAM and IR from other partition. Drag and drop on left.

This picture I saved a preset, no drag and drop, but a new plugin and tried to load preset : files listed after FAILED was an old preset that I tried before new preset

Saved preset also failed to drag and drop properly.

This was Mixbus 10.2.3. Maybe I was mistaken and it was not failing on Linux, Just Ardour 8.12 and MB 10.2 On win 10.

Oh. VST3 presets… these are another Steinberg oddity and a small miracle that they work at all, when they work :slight_smile:

Ok. I will keep in mind VST3 does not drag and drop well like lv2. Too bad lv2 doesn’t get more use by developers, as it seems like it could be superior in multiple ways.

Well in this specific case it might be an issue with the plugin.

VST3 Factory presets are effectively just changing a single [hidden] control port, similar to MIDI Patch/Program changes (as opposed to other plugin standards, where a preset is comprised of a complete plugin state).

Do I understand that it works correctly IFF you don’t use presets?

It does not work correctly no matter what. I tried both ways as a form of troubleshooting. Thank you for your response on this. I did not know VST3’s had potential issues with this.

just copying the plugin from one track to another should work (also VST3). So this is indeed a bug somewhere.

Ok. I tried drag and drop commercial plugins (Brainworx) and other VST3s. The settings were copied correctly. It is the Neural Amp Modeler plugin causing the issue.
