Can I drag in multiple sources onto the time line at once (and perhaps choose whether they are put onto a track end to end or vertically arranged on multiple tracks)?
Nope. We deliberately decided to make drag-n-drop a simple, dialog-free experience.
If you want control over importing etc. you need to use the import dialog, which provides all kinds of control (some might even say too much control).
