Years ago I used to get some pretty cool sounds with LMMS using a controller which modulated some synth “plain” sound (got with “Triple Oscilaltor” to be specific) by applying a filter and then changing some parameters with an LFO.
I leave a video to help understand the idea. The video is in italian, but I think it’s pretty clear what’s happening.
Is there a way to do the same in Ardour?
Actually, if I understood it right, this kind of features are already included in some instruments/plugins. E.g. HELM synth allows you to modulate parameters like volume, filter shapes ecc… via envelopes and LFOs. I didn’t study the plugins thoroughly, but I’m confident that also other famous synths like Yoshimi allow you to do the same.
I was wondering if there were other ways to modulate the sound in Ardour, (perhaps using some famous/widely used plugins).
For example: can I modulate volume/pitch/tune etc… Of an instrument (which of course is not a synth which includes this feature out of the box) using and envelope or an LFO? Maybe there are some plugins which I can include in my plugins chain to control this parameters? Can I generalize this to control any parameter I want using those plugins?
Clicking on the “A” (automation) button in a track header will provide a dropdown that allows you to show an “automation lane” for any automatable parameter, both of the track itself and all plugins in the track. You can draw, record and edit automation in this lane.
What you cannot do is “non-manual” automation (e.g. an LFO that will control some parameter). We have future plans for this, but for now you either need to draw it or ride some faders or move a mouse.
Perhaps I’m misunderstanding something, but isn’t this similar to what I did here thanks to your input, Paul?
Basically I used an QMidiArp LFO plugin on one MIDI track to control the Wah parameter of the GxWahwah plugin on a guitar track. The result can be heard around the 20 second mark here. (Though the volume on the guitar is controlled by lane automation as you describe)
I guess this wouldn’t be “Automation” in the sense of an automation lane, but is a way to use an LFO to control some plugin parameter.
