Using MIDI in Ardour has showed me a tricky aspect with dependent and independent regions:
There is no form of knowing/changing what copying/duplicating mode is active unless you open “Session properties”.
There is no form of knowing which existing regions are dependent or independent.
Thinking about it, I believe that dependent regions should be showed as the same region, with only one name. Different regions should have, in that model, a specific name. What do you think about this?
I don’t think using the same name is technically possible, but an icon (e.g. a small chain to show it is linked, like this one ) in the top left area would be very helpful.
I think it is important being able of selecting copy or duplicate mode in each case, without entering properties. Both forms are different work methods in my mind, compatible in the same composition. Dependent can be used in long drum sequences, and independent seems very useful when composing minimalist suble changes.
