All true. Except that the applications to control the mixer, when run with no arguments, tend to open the default device. If you are using PulseAudio, that will be the PulseAudio pseudo-device, and not the real hardware one. So any attempts to control the signal flow within the device can be mildly obstructed by PulseAudio in this case.
