That means the color theme you are using is not compatible.
If a theme misses colors, Ardour shows random ones every time the widget is painted.
Preferences > Appearance > Colors … pick the default dark theme.

i’ve picked xcolors from menu, haven’t modified a thing… strange…
about the greyed menus - i guess something was in the background, since i cannot replicate the behavior now. Thanks for the quick help!
I believe the issue here is boxy buttons with Xcolors theme.
Can you try to switching to the “dark” theme and see if the colored borders continue to occur?
opening new project - no issues:
switching to xcolors in new project no issues:
now i open problematic project with prior set xcolors, no issue:
Hmm, I was hoping you would stop after step 1 …
Ok, now i realize - prior to reboot i’ve changed
render canvas on openGL to NO
and all was fine after,
now i’ve returned it to low resolution - and now it’s again funky colors
looks like it’s the culprit… no idea why and when i got it to ‘low resolution’
EDIT: now, if i revert to NO, funkyness is again there (no resolve :D)
i don’t see big uptime as problem unless it’s mostly ‘clean’ - that means no installing too many stuff. Lately i’ve been testing numerous DAWs and plugins, so there’s that…
Here’s the latest overview(render canvas on openGL to NO):
could it be something tied to that particular project? not a single new project does show funky screen
I’m getting the funky colour issue too, I’m on 8.7, running on Debian testing.
For me it’s affecting volume faders in the editor and mixer. Doesn’t matter what theme I select.
Ardour 8.7.1 code name “funky colour” incoming
Our releases are named after Eno’s album releases.
Any recipe to recreate this? Any steps that prevent it, at least some of the time?
That is a piece of Ardour’s lore i wasn’t aware of
Annoyingly (or not) I just opened the same project I opened earlier today and the colours are all back to normal.
Can you start Ardour from a terminal? there should be messages to stderr:
Color <colorname> not found
.
it would be interesting to see which specific color is missing from the color theme you use.
I get lots of these
Color generic button: outline not found
Color fader outline not found
Color meter outline not found
Do you have custom theme in your preferences folder? Assuming GNU/Linux
ls ~/.config/ardour8/*.colors
/home/dave/.config/ardour8/my-dark-ardour-8.6.colors
/home/dave/.config/ardour8/my-dark-ardour.colors
/home/dave/.config/ardour8/my-xcolors-ardour-8.6.colors
/home/dave/.config/ardour8/my-xcolors-ardour.colors
So it seem those customized color files do not have the “outline” colors.
Does removing those color files help?
Before removing the files, can you upload my-dark-ardour.colors
. I am interested in any differences to the file that comes with Ardour: ardour/gtk2_ardour/themes/dark-ardour.colors at master · Ardour/ardour · GitHub
Yes, removing those files gets rid of the funky colours.
