Colère - Piilou

Hi there !

New track 100% Ardour made. This one, like my previous work, was entirely produced at home, and played by myself, with minimal processing, following a similar approach to what I previously shared.

Colère - Pilou

Colère in french means “anger”. In this song, the emotion depicted is not the one that explode and disappear, but rather the one you may keep a little while with you.

Again, many thanks to the Ardour team !

Hi,

Very nicely done, I like the dry closeness and intimacy of the sound, it sounds like the listener is in the room with you. It is a nice balance of lo-fi but also having a lot of sonic character. Tres Bon!

Thanks for the kind words ! It’s a simple drum set from pdp and an old tama snare, almost a piccolo one. 3 mics: in the kick, in front of the snare, and one overhead. Pretty cheap mics as well. EQ and compressed with LSP plugins. I try to get it tuned, but I still learning on that part. I’d love being able to tune drums on chosen notes ; maybe for a future release !

I use the mobile app “drum tuner EZ” for this, but I’m sure others do too

You’ll create the best conditions for tuning a drum if the following applies:

  1. The drum shell should not be oval.

  2. The bearing edge should be reasonably flat and undamaged.

  3. The drumhead must be centered on the bearing edge; the aluminum rim of the head should not touch the shell.

  4. The opposite drumhead should not vibrate while tuning.

  5. Most importantly, you’ll need boundless patience.

Have fun!

First of all, i like the tune you posted. Sounds “real” to my ears.

About drum tuning - well, i’m certainly in no way a specialist in this field - but i found the tips of two gentleman very enlightening.

  1. Steve Albini giving a short but sweet overview to consonant, rising and falling tuning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SPjvfVsHik

  2. Eric Valentine showing the whole process of how he is tuning his drums https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6_7aw5UUeA

A lot of cool tricks in there, too.
