I am using the wonderful ardour 4.6. I have used “D” key to change the gain in a region, and now i want to change the overall gain of my already gain-changed region one a gain (say i want make it more quite). I was wondering if this would be possible? Note the i want to play with the gain in only this one region, and not other regions which i have on the track.
To change a region’s gain. You can select the region and use Alt-6 to increase and Alt-7 to decrease the gain. You can also right click on it and go to the properties and adjust the ‘Region Gain’ to directly enter in dB the gain. These affect the entire region while the draw tool ‘D’ or edit tool ‘E’ affect the gain inside of a region.
I wondered what had happened to ‘^’ and ‘&’ for adjusting the region gain - changed from Shift-6 and Shift-7 to Alt-6 and Alt-7!
Note that altering the overall region gain and using automation to adjust the fader setting are not adjusting exactly the same thing. The region gain is applied before any processing, so if there is any dynamics processing (e.g. a compressor) in the pre-fader section of the track, adjusting the region gain will change the level going into the compressor and hence the amount of compression, while changing the fader automation affects only the signal coming out of the compressor.
