Can I create SYS-EX commands?

How about, the option to pass on (to e.g. a synth)
those midi messages that Ardour does not understand?

Ardour can record and play back SysEx messages just fine, and you can load MIDI files that contain SysEx. – There is however no UI to create them from scratch in Ardour’s Editor.

PS. it is possible with a Plugin or Script. e.g. the “MIDI Tuning” Lua script produces MTS sysex messages.

It comes with Ardour 6 (since 6.6.0).

Search for tx_midi in ardour/pitch_to_mts.lua at master · Ardour/ardour · GitHub

Note that this produces MIDI messages which are injected into the data-stream of a track or plugin (you cannot directly record those events).
