Are subgroups possible

Hi,
a speculative question, is it possible to create “subgroups”, which would make it possible to create a group of subgroups ?

Best regards (and please don’t ask why I had this idea  )

Not directly. Groups in Ardour are mainly to group two mono tracks to stereo (so they share gain, mute, solo) or similar multi-channel setups.

For more complex chained or nested controls VCAs are usually a better idea: In Ardour a given track may be controlled by many VCAs, and a VCA can likewise be controlled by one or more VCA. So you can do subgroups and partial subgroups and…

The advantage here is that gain and mute automation from a VCA is also applied.

Okay, understood.
My idea came from the following situation.

The group members on keyboard change.
Obviously only one artist is sitting on the keyboard at one time.

The first artist plays keyboard and sings (and sometimes plays trumpet instead of singing).
The second artist plays keyboards and sings.

So I made the tracks as followed:

Artist 1: Key A1, Mic A1, Trump A1
Artist 2: Key A2, Mic A2

These tracks are members in the group “Keyboard” (as I see it - here - as a place where music is created). My idea was to have two subgroups : Keyboard A1, Keyboard A2

Only one of the “subgroups” is active at one time.

It’s obvious that all the tracks have to have a different mix as - for example" - vocal through the mic is
different from trumpet at the mic.

It would have been nice to activate/deactivate those “subgroups” depending on who is sitting at keys.

So my solution now is to have simply two groups that are activated/deactivated depending on who is sitting there
