Ardour version for iBook G3 900MHZ

Hi !

Is there any Ardour version which run under iBook G3 PPC 900MHZ ?

I tried Ardour PPC v.2.8.11 but no luck !

Cheers

@MD: what didn’t work? I don’t know of any reason to think that it would just fail outright. Did you follow the instructions toward the bottom of http://ardour.org/first_time_osx_native particularly the part about “It Doesn’t Work!” ?

Hey Paul !

The point is that nothing worked. Ardour crashed immediately !

Here is the log-file:

The same happened with mixbus … “incompatible cpu-subtype”

MD

@MD: ah, one of those. Hmm, that’s a problem. Can you paste the output of the command system_profiler run from a terminal window? But can we also verify that you downloaded the PPC build(s) of Ardour & Mixbus, and not the Intel build(s) ?

Yes I downloaded the PPC version of both !

@MD: this a very old apple G3. i’ll have to check our compile flags to see what we are settings that makes it incompatible with the CPU inside your machine. Mixbus is likely to be rather un-useful on this machine because of the constant DSP load it generates, given your rather underpowered system (for this sort of thing). Ardour should be OK though, once we get you a build that can actually be run on your machine.

<< this a very old apple G3. >>

Indeed it is
It just should playback a track or be used with a minimum project file (2 or 3 tracks) !

<< Ardour should be OK though, once we get you a build that can actually be run on your machine. >>

Wow this is more than I expected ! Would be awesome if this would work out !
Thank you very much Paul !

MD

Is there any chance for a build which will run on my machine ?

Cheers,

MD

@MD: I’ve had no time to investigate this, sorry. Keep bugging me about it.

What I am doing herewith !

Hey Paul !

I am really not the kind of guy and don´t have the mentality to bug people continuously

so please tell me if I can expect a version for my machine in the near future

or I have to go for alternatives !

I would surely donate a decent sum !

Thanks for your time !

MD

G3 bump

I’m running an old powerbook g3 and I get similar errors.

The requirements listed OS X 10.4 and Jack.
Maybe you could list minimum cpu/ram requirements so folks like us would know our machines are too old before we buy the software?

A quick answer would be very much appreciated !

It´s really disappointing getting ignored !

That´s not the way I choosed with MY customers !

I bet now I will get an answer …

@MD

You aren’t being ignored, what is happening though is there has not been much of a change, and Paul is currently out of town as well to be able to answer. Since it requires having a notebook that old to build and test on, it is a bit difficult to accomplish.

   Seablade

I don´t talk about the last 2 days, but the last 3 weeks with no answer on not just my comments !

That it is neccessary to have a notebook that old to build on wasn´t obvious !

So this information is as well appreciated, as disillusioning because

that doesn´t make it just a bit difficult to accomplish, but not realistic I guess !

To get this information would help me to come to a decision !

MD

The hardware may not be an absolute requirement(It certainly makes things much easier though), but it is a requirement for effectively testing it.

The catch is, that there is obviously some changes to the instruction set that compiling on a G4 as we currently do vs a G3, and it has to be determined exactly what those changes are, and if it is feasible to compile a backwards compatible version(It may not be, but then again it may be).

So at the time being, saying that it is difficult is most likely correct. If could turn out to be unrealistic, but the difficult path is the more likely at the moment I think.
