Ok …
so Jack sees Phonic and is able to start,
but in Ardour’s audio start up window I only see USB-Audio, not the Firefly .
Where am I going wrong ?

Be sure Jack is running, before starting Ardour.
Ardour displays only devices that it believes are duplex capable (i.e. simultaneous playback and capture). Something about the Phonic leads ardour to (probably incorrectly) believe that it cannot do this. Qjackctl and other front-ends to JACK do not care about this sort of thing, so you can (and should) use them to start, stop and configure JACK.
