Ardour crash often on assigning channels to hardware

Hi,

I’m not sure on which version this began, but on Mac OS X Intel Ardour version 8.12 still the app crashes when for instance I try to assign Midi Clock to a hardware synth. Or it hangs for a while with the notorious “spinning beachball”.

I’ve got the full crash log which would be sent to Apple. Reluctant to post it here in full however I’ve got nothing to hide, but I can post it wherever you want.

Is this a known thing or shall I file it on Mantis?

I think the mixbus crew have seen this on some specific versions of macOS. There’s been some investigation but no understanding of the crash yet. If you have a reproducible recipe, that would be very useful.

Apple won’t do anything. They never forwarded any of those to us.

There are some reports from other users that showing the Audio or MIDI connection window causes crashes on some Intel Mac (Arm Mac and other OS are not affected), so far the issue has eluded us.

Which macOS version are you using?

I’m on a Macbook Pro Retina, mid-2015, running Ventura 13.7.2 (22H313) via OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

Oh it’s reproducable, in the project I’m working on right now.

When I connect MIDI clock out to Crave midi in, I can make this connection but whatever I click next kills Ardour…

Mostly when I freshly start Ardour I can make a change or two in the grid, after that it’s almost guaranteed to collaps. I also notice that whenever I make a change and close the window, there’s a spinning beachball for a little while. After that I either return to the Editor window or Ardour crashes completely.

But this project now, it’s an instant kill. I could transfer the complete project, but it is big (1.7 GB already), and I use a complicated structure of audio interfaces (combined 26 inputs and 12 outputs).

Edit: just tried again in my project, connected Midi Clock out to Crave in, dragged the window from one monitor to the other (native Macbook screen), clicked some other tabs. There was no spinning beachball and everything was set just fine - I could close the window without trouble.

I’m encountering that crash fairly often on (Manjaro) Linux on an AMD Ryzen too, though not regularly, so for now I can’t help with reproducing it, I’m afraid.

I open the connections window from the right-click context menu of the inputs or outputs button of the mixer strip in the edit view. When the crash occurs it is when I make connection (green dot) and then Ardour becomes unresponsive for a few seconds and then crashes.

I use the ardour-git package from the AUR, with which I compile from the latest tag for version 8.x on my system, which is why I haven’t reported this yet.
