Ardour and Wayland

Apparently one will not be able to use X11 with Plasma 6.8, coming out soon (tomorrow?). Some distros, like Debian Sid, which I use, will then soon be updated and have no option to use X11 (at least with Plasma).

I’ve seen, without paying too much attention, that some problem arise when using Ardour with Wayland. Is that still the case? Is there anything one can do to minimize problems?

I imagine one can still use X11 with another DE, so that might be a solution, but I thought I’d check and see what the current state is.

Wayland itself comes with XWayland and/or XNest, both of which allow the user to run applications using the X Window API under wayland.

No Linux system is going to be able to function usefully if it bars applications that use X Window’s API. Switching “fully” to Wayland doesn’t mean you can’t run X Window applications, it means there is no option to not use Wayland.

Ardour will function with either XWayland or XNest, but will have some issues that do not occur with a “normal” X server.

It is fully usable though. I run Fedora, which has been Wayland only for about a year, and haven’t noticed anything more severe than the usual KDE quirks I work around.

Could we get a finer point on that? Also which of these edge-cases are due to Ardour itself and which are due to design limitations in the implementation of Wayland? It seems to me the headline is “Xorg is dead, long live Xorg!” and that whatever imposed limitations exist in Wayland seem not to be taken very seriously upstream… As end-users there are oceans of FUD on either side of the issue to wade through…

None of the edge cases are “due to Ardour”. Ardour works as expected with an Xorg X server and a desktop environment that follows Freedesktop.org’s guidelines.

Reports suggest that Xnest works a little better than Xwayland, because all the windows in Ardour (plugins, dialogs etc) are inside a single Wayland window-equivalent; with Xwayland, each Ardour window gets its own Wayland window-equivalent.

But reports also suggest that they both work OK, and the edge cases, if any, are caused by wierdly behaving plugins and non-comforming desktop environments.

I use Ardour under sway without any issues (which is Wayland-native with Xwayland for compatibility). Anything that is “Wayland-only” just means it will rely on Xwayland to provide X11 compatibility (rather than being able to run with an X server session).

You should be fine.
