Ardour and Surge, patch update

I use the same Surge XT patch through multiple tracks. My problem is when I modify and save a custom patch, it doesn’t populate through the other tracks. The workaround I found is to open each Surge VST interface, switch to another patch, and switch back to the one I updated. This takes in consideration the new version. As you can imagine, this workaround is far from perfect. Would you know a way to sync the change on the fly?

Could you perhaps create a MIDI bus, put the Surge XT plugin there, and then remove the Surge XT VSTis from from all your MIDI tracks and route the MIDI from them to your bus? This is how I typically use setBFree, for instance: I add a MIDI track for each of the consoles and another for the pedals, and then route their output to a bus with the plugin.

That won’t work, of course, if you need to mix the outputs separately.

Thank you @tseaver. I already use an audio bus for my MIDI tracks, but not a MIDI bus yet. Do you confirm I still need different tracks if my MIDI instruments are different ?

Yes. A given MIDI track or bus can only have at most one instrument, AFAIK.

That is what I thought. In that case, I will keep my tracks separated and accept this strange bug. I wish I find a better way to update them at once, even manually. Thank you for your help!

It’s not a bug. Each instrument/synth is diffierent. Usually if you use the same plugin more than once, it’s because they use different settings.

I find illogic to have different patches with the same name in the same session. Like having two «grand piano» with different sounds, that is what I have.
