Ardour and or Reaper sandboxed?

Hello everyone,

i’m currently betatesting a Linux version of a plugin. This uses licence activation. I just found out that when i activate the plugin in Ardour, Reaper wants another activation. Reaper and Ardour also send different machine ID codes to the activation server.

So we’re wondering if Ardour (or Reaper) runs in a sandboxed environment. Anyone knows anything?

Ardour builds from ardour.org do not run in a sandbox. Neither do the Linux distro builds for most distributions (but not all - some use flatpak).

Me and the developer are both a bit clueless how that behavior is coming from. I run Ardour from your builds and i’m also not aware that Reaper is a sandbox in my system. Asked just to make sure.

So for a noob (me):
When Ardour is /opt/Ardour-9.7.0/bin/ardour-9.7.0
and Reaper is /home/user/opt/REAPER/reaper

than can i assume that also Reaper is not sandboxed because auf /opt or does this mean nothing and Reaper can still send different machine IDs?

What does “machine ID” mean in that context? I am not aware that there is an industry standard definition for that term.

In my user profil from that plugin company i can manage my licences and there is a field “machine name” which corresponds to my hostname and for machine ID it’s a long number. I assume a hash of some kind. How exactly this is generated i don’t have access to. But according to developer the difference should not be normal.

Before we deep dive into what tiny detail-feature could be handled differently that causes this, we just want to make sure, that this is not a known feature of any of the DAWs. So Paul’s answer pretty much did it all on the Ardour sitefor us. If anyone knows about Reaper i’m glad to hear but i also reached out to the Reaper forum.

Sounds like a badly implemented DRM scheme by the plugin developer

Could be. We just check the options. Be patient with him, i convinced him doing a Linux build. Win and Mac are already on the market. :smiley:

And could also be some weird thing on my system. Atm we’re looking in all directions.
