Ardour 9.8 on Ubuntu 23.10

Hello folks,

compiling Ardour 9.8 on Ubuntu 23.10,

on ./waf i got this:

[ 867/1904] Compiling libs/tk/ytkmm/uimanager.cc

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/libtag.a(id3v2framefactory.cpp.o): relocation R_X86_64_TPOFF32 against `_ZN12_GLOBAL__N_118embeddedFrameDepthE’ can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/bin/ld: failed to set dynamic section sizes: bad value
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

Waf: Leaving directory `/home/goondaisy/Desktop/Ardour-9.8.0/build’
Build failed
→ task in ‘libardour’ failed with exit status 1 (run with -v to display more information)

any clue?

Cheers

Apples and Oranges, but I just finished a build of 9.8.244 on Ubuntu 26.10. Successfully builds and runs on Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio, both 26.10.

Have you compiled Ardour successfully on your machine before or is this the first time you’ve compiled Ardour on your machine? Build errors on a supported distro are usually a missing dev package or build dependency version mismatch. Check the nightly list.

Did you compile taglib yourself, seeing as you have it in /usr/local/lib as opposed to the standard /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ location? If so you may have forgotten to compile it as a shared library.
Ardour usually uses the shared library libtag.so.1 and not the static libtag.a.

If you don’t have any specific needs for a self compiled taglib you can just do an apt install libtag1-dev to get the standard, shared library version.

Hi, it is quite the first time i build and compile something as such at all. Took three days but manage to have this after ‘python3 ./waf configure’:

‘configure’ finished successfully (26.810s)

As for missing devs: everything compiled allright after building from source or straight install -dev pkg; except for sigc++ wich is state in configure as:

Checking for ‘sigc+±2.0’ >= 2.12.1 : not found

Weird as i also got:

libsigc+±3.0-dev is already the newest version (3.4.0-7)
libsigc+±3.0-dev set to manually installed

but, from the config.log:

Checking for ‘sigc+±2.0’ >= 2.12.1
[‘/usr/bin/pkg-config’, ‘sigc+±2.0 >= 2.12.1’, ‘–cflags’, ‘–libs’, ‘sigc+±2.0’]
err: Package dependency requirement ‘sigc+±2.0 >= 2.12.1’ could not be satisfied.
Package ‘sigc+±2.0’ has version ‘2.12.0’, required version is ‘>= 2.12.1’

not found
from ~/Desktop/Ardour-9.8.0/libs/widgets: The configuration failed

Every other dependency bond to sigc++ libs got it right thought, e.g.:

Checking for ‘glibmm-2.4’ >= 2.32.0
[‘/usr/bin/pkg-config’, ‘glibmm-2.4 >= 2.32.0’, ‘–cflags’, ‘–libs’, ‘glibmm-2.4’]
out: -I/usr/include/glibmm-2.4 -I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/glibmm-2.4/include -I/usr/local/include -I/usr/local/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/local/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/glib-2.0/include -I/usr/include/sigc+±2.0 -I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sigc+±2.0/include -L/usr/local/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu -lglibmm-2.4 -lgobject-2.0 -lglib-2.0 -lsigc-2.0

yes

Althought, I also have this voice previous to the 'Package ‘sigc+±2.0’ has version ‘2.12.0’, required version is ‘>= 2.12.1’ and in the same log:

Checking for ‘sigc+±2.0’ >= 2.0
[‘/usr/bin/pkg-config’, ‘sigc+±2.0 >= 2.0’, ‘–cflags’, ‘–libs’, ‘sigc+±2.0’]
out: -I/usr/include/sigc+±2.0 -I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sigc+±2.0/include -lsigc-2.0

yes

some PKG_CONFIG_PATH mismatch or conflict maybe? I tried different settings for it but still have the problem.
