Ardour 8.2.0 Freezes when loading any lv2 or vst plugin - RESOLVED

Hello Team,

I just subscribed to Ardour to support this project and get the latest version. In version 8.2.0, I am unable to load any lv2 or VST plugins, the application just hangs. I also have version 7.3.0 from the Debian Bookworm repos and the plugins load just fine on that version, however I would rather use the newer version.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice on how to troubleshoot this?

Does this crash happen when you add the plugin to a track or when you first open Ardour?

Thank you for the quick response.

If I add the plugin to the master track, it opens fine, however when I go to add a MIDI track and try to select something like Vitalium or ZynAddSubFX, that is when it hangs.

I just tried ZynAddSubFX LV2 here (whatever is the latest version in the Debian repo) and it loaded fine for me.

Do you see anything in Ardour’s log (flashing red button in the top right of the UI)?

When I first start the program, it’s flashing yellow and gives me some warnings related to Carla, but I don’t use Carla. When I try to add the track, the app just completely freezes and that button is grey. Here is the output from when I press the yellow button when I first start the program:

Are you using JACK or ALSA? and does it make a difference if you switch?

I was using Jack, it actually worked when I switched to ALSA, the problem with using ALSA is other applications cannot use my line out speakers while Ardour is running which is why I switched to JACK/Pipewire in the first place.

Sounds like a known pipewire bug (fixed in May 2023, but some distros have not updated):

Ah that explains why it works here, I’m on Debian Testing.

I installed Pipewire 1.0 from Bookworm backports and it worked!! Thanks for the help.
