Ardour 6 on Debian 11 crashes after years of flawless working order

Hi, I’m new here, having registered because I am looking for advice on this problem:

I’ve been working on a song for 6 weeks now and have accumulated 19 tracks, most of them with 3 plugins: ACE Compressor, ACE EQ and ACE Reverb.

Audio system is Jack, driver is ALSA, audio device is onboard Intel sound card for use with pc speakers and a ZOOM U-22 for miked amplifyer and lineout recording, and a standard USB Microphone for voice recording. The audio devices are activated with alsamixer.

Ardour 6 comes with the currently installed distro , Debian 11 LTS, and has worked fine for 3 years now, no issues whatsoever. About a week ago, flashing audio glitches occured every now and then on both record and play, but they are not on the respective wave files I exported.

Since today, ardour crashes continuously when I record, play, or let it sit idling. It does not last longer than 30 seconds by now.

After having browsed the forum I have set realtime permissions using the prompt displayed in the audio.conf file in etc/security/limits.d. and set the buffer size according to Jack. Still no change.

I’m not the world’s most accomplished user and I understand absolutely nothing of the following.

Can anybody help? Thank you.

Usually, I start Ardour by clicking an icon on the desktop. Just now I did it using the command line, which returned:

Switch to the ALSA backend first (via another throwaway session, if necessary), then run the debug attempt.

Did you try safe mode yet?

Thanks for your rapid response, much obliged! Yep, I did try save mode, no change.

And thank you for the advice on the backend, this time I was more successful, but unfortunately, I can’t post the output now, Newbees seem to be limited.

Better to use http://pastebin.com/ anyway …

Err, yes. I just signed up:

  1. Nothing super obvious in the gdb output
  2. This isn’t an ardour.org build of Ardour, so we can’t really support it
  3. I’d recommend at least trying out the free/demo build of 8.11 from Download Ardour | Ardour Community It can be parallel installed along with your existing version.

Thank you, if only I knew how to do that. Installing third-party software on a distro is not the sort of thing I ever trained for…

It has nothing to do with the distro. It’s a couple of commands, described here: https://ardour.org/first_time_linux.html

Whatt? Man, that was super easy! Copy and paste, enterpassword, press return three times, andf Bob’s your Uncle. Things have certainly evolved in the past years since I last tried something like that. Coool!

That was the Blackadder-Whatt btw

I tried the newly installed version and opened the project which crashed today with Ardour6. Works fine so far. If it continues to do that, you have just saved a culturally significant good and earned yourself the status of Main Man :sunglasses:

Maybe the old Version is simply broken or one of the latest distro updates led to some kind of incompatibility. I’ll try again after a few further updates.

Again, thank you very much, all the best!

To be fair, Ardour has come on a lot since v6 (a v9 release is currently in the post…) and it’s generally recommended to use that latest version from ardour.org.

Glad it’s working now anyway :+1: don’t forget that you can share your work / compositions in the Made With Ardour section of the forum, if that type of thing interests you.

I get it that many folks hate to Update things since Tools we use often we dont like them to change often. But with Linux I have found its a good idea to keep things as Current as possible. I run a Debian Testing with Debian Multimedia packages ( Sparky Linux Multimedia Edition ) and Update/Upgrade/Full-Upgrade Daily and this way I run into very few issues with my Software and any new things added to my Software is usually not that complicated. The only Software I remember doing a drastic change was Blender 3D some years back. I never mastered using Blender anyway so it was not a real issue. Keeping everything Updated helps.

I would like to add that the CPU frequency governor “ondemand” was set. Very convenient: During the installation process I was warned that my system uses frequency scaling and that it might affect performance. I wasn’t aware of that until then. Maybe this and the fact that all faders of my 19 tracks are automated, also some plugins, contributed to the problem. The table of processes constantly reads a sum of at least 150% CPU usage during record and play. That’s for both cores, I assume. I just changed CPU frequency to performance.

Another question: When I first opened my project with the newly installed 8.11 Demo, it created a file with the appendix 6000. I didn’t quite pay attention, what is this for?

And: I’m considering to completely remove Ardour6 and reinstall it. Is it safe to do that? Will it, and the 8.11 Demo, still find the required audio files?

Thanks for your attention, everyone.

@willy_dinglefinger: I will share the finished song in the Made With Ardour section, thanks for the tip!

He certainly is that!

When I first opened my project with the newly installed 8.11 Demo, it created a file with the appendix 6000.

I think that is created by the new version of Ardour which has a different file format from Version 6. It’s a backup copy of the original in case you ever want or need to go back to using Ardour 6 on the project, because Ardour 6 won’t be able to use a file created by Ardour 8.11.

Specifically the project file. All the audio files are the same format.

The more important measure is the percentage of DSP used in the upper corner of ardour. That is a measure not just of total CPU time used, but total processing time out of the allowed time period (which is determined by the buffer size settings).

Yes, you can remove and install distribution provided builds, they install to a different location than the builds from the ardour web site, so no conflict.
Presumably you save your audio projects in a user writable folder, so those will all be in a separate location than the program, so no effect on existing project files of removing and re-installing.

Right. I remember now that 8.11. postet an according message .

Update: In the meantime, I subscribed, downloaded and installed the full version 8.11, and have continued to work on the current project. Works like a charm, I’m very pleased. Only thing that I DO NOT like at all is the appearance of the ACE EQ. Where are the knobs? Those controls were much better in the older version. I can click on “edit with generic controls”, but it’s quite cumbersome. Does anybody know how to change that? I found no entry in the menues.

I completely removed Ardour 6 from the Distro and reinstalled it, no improvement whatsoever. So I completely removed it for good.

Uninstalling the demo version of 8.11 was a peace of cake, like its installation and the installation of the full version, just follow the instructions provided on the webpage. Remember what a pain in the neck it once was, if not impossible, to install any third-party software that was not supported by the sources.list…

Thanks to everybody for your response and the useful information you provided.
For the time being: Good night, sleep tight.

Yep!

DSP is 58% at its highest, by the way.
