Ardour 6.9 Session not opening in Ardour 8.6

Sorry for being another person who can’t open another session.
Difference to all the other threads I found is: I got no hint what is exactly going wrong, so I can’t edit the file manually… This is what ardour prints on the screen:

Session "/home/mitsch/Krach&Klang/Projekte/Das Land meiner Träume/DLmT_Szene_06 (snapshot DLmT_Szene_06)" did not load successfully:
Cannot initialize session/engine: Invalid or corrupt session state.

---ERROR: Could not set session state from XML

As mentioned in the Headline, the session is created in ardour 6.9, my actual version number counts 8.6. It’s the deb-Version packed with Ubuntu Studio 24.10 on a Gnome Desktop.

Odd though. When I try to open it (here: Ardour 8.12),I don’t get this error:

The session uses a lot of ports though. What Audio/MIDI System do you use? Perhaps you run into jack’s default port limit (256). if you use jack, start it with jackd --port-max 4096 -d .... or try Ardour’s ALSA backend instead.

I got “Failed to register port “EmmaSchritt/audio_out 49”, reason is unknown from here” and a segfault when trying with a self-compiled (using llvm/clang 17.0.5) 8.12 in Ubuntu 22.04 with pipewire-1.4.0

Ardour 7.5 (gcc) didn’t segfault but threw out the same error. I had to edit out all of the “<Port type=“audio” name=“WHATEVER”/>” to get it to open in either version.

Edit: ardour-6.9 (gcc) also failed, with “ERROR: unable to create port ‘EmmaSchritt/audio_out 50’: failed constructor”, so the jack port issue seems plausible.

Edit2 : Yeah, I could open it just fine in 8.12 after creating a ~/.config/pipewire/jack.conf.d/custom.conf with
jack.properties = {
jack.max-client-ports = 2048
}

PS. a debug version of Ardour 6.9 … 8.12 will assert, and exit due to bypassed aux-send panners.

The “Raum” bus only has 4 channels, but some tracks send 128 signals there. Optimized builds will work fine and only send the first 4 channels there.

You’re right: A lot of ports! Doing some Ambisonics-stuff with IEM-Plugins that generate 64 in/out no matter which Ambisonics order…
The limit of ports could be a good hint. I’m on pipewire. Will check @peder 's configuration proposal and get back here, again…
