Ardour 2.8.1 PPC refuses to launch

Ardour 2.8.1 PPC refuses to launch.

I fully deleted Ardour 2.8.
I do not have LADSPA VST Bridge.
Jack os x 0.82 is running.

No problem to launch Ardour 2.8

Okay, I’ve had similar problems (Mac OS X 10.4.11, PPC): Installed JackOSX.0.82 and Ardour 2 2.8.1/5337. Ardour would not start—didn’t even register on the console.

…and, yes, the solution was to unpack the Ardour file with StuffIt Expander.

Console window output?

i have the same situation, the odd thing is there’s NO console output.

i believe i have libcurl, or at least these are on my system:
/usr/lib/libcurl.2.dylib

my machine is a dual 450 g4 10.4.11 fully software updated.

i have run earlier versions of ardour2, but have removed the apps and also the config files in my home directory.

Console output means that you open Applications -> Utilities -> Console as described in http://ardour.org/first_time_osx_native

If you see no sign of Ardour there when you try to start it up, then your system is totally broken. If you do see some output relating to Ardour, then that would be useful.

yes, i know what Console is and i am used to seeing some console output when earlier versions of ardour have started.

for instance: this is what console reports when the old version of ardour starts (yes i removed the new one and reinstalled 2.7):

Hmm. I just downloaded Ardour 2.8.1 (Built from 5337) from the website and ran it with Rosetta here and I am getting it to open on OS X 10.5(Of course there are other issues preventing me from doing a more thorough test other than to confirm it appears to be working due to running it via Rosetta)

I believe it gets packaged on 10.4 if memory serves.

Let us try two things just in case. Both in the Terminal. Open up a Terminal.app and move your ardour config directory to the side with this command…

mv .ardour2 .ardour-old

Note the periods before those directory names. Then try to relaunch Ardour and see if it works for you.

If that doesn’t work stay in the terminal and run the following…

open /Applications/Ardour2.app

Assuming of course your Ardour2 is in your applications directory. See if this makes a difference or gives you some output either in the Terminal or on the Console.app

By the way, I should mention both of those suggestions are complete shot in the darks that I don’t really expect to work based off what you have said so far. As Paul said, there is more than likely something fundamentally wrong with your system.

Which also rings a bell, the only other time I have seen something like this there was something ver wrong with the system, but in every case that it happened, which was on 10.4 on PPC, there was one very obvious symptom. Do you have a working Terminal.app in your Applications/Utilities folder?

If you do not, which I am starting to suspect, the issue was no something you did, it was related to a failed update courtesy of Apple. It happened to me a couple of times, and there seemed to be no pattern to it. It also affected OS X’s ability to run any scripts, which if you notice it needs to do to actually start Ardour, the script is what is actually launched in the .app which in turn launches the binary after some setup work.

My system is fully updated and operational. I’m running Logic Pro 8.0.2 + Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 at the same time without problem.

Unlike the other poster, you at least have output on the console, so it isn’t the same issue.

Besides what I was posting about wouldn’t affect most, if any, of those programs(Other than obviously Terminal.app;)

Are you using Ardour to start Jack? And are you opening a session or creating a new one?

You should have one from Ardour 2.8 assuming those messages were from the same system. It gets created automatically by Ardour, and has been for quite some time.

What I did:

Launched Jack 0.82 and then Ardour 2.8 creating new session
Recorded a piece of audio
Saved session
Closed Ardour 2.8
Closed Jack

fully uninstalled Ardour 2.8 (including .ardour folder) as recommended by Paul in OS X instructions<<

Copied Ardour2.app (2.8.1) in Applications folder
Launched Jack 0.82 and then Ardour 2.8.1: no success with Ardour 2.8.1

@ptrubert: crazy. Is there a time when we/I can get you on IRC? What timezone are you in?

BTW, please note that the OS X install instructions do not suggest that you uninstall older versions of Ardour, merely the ~/.ardour2 folder that may be used. Because of the current state of the download system, you can’t easily re-download 2.8. Different versions of Ardour are totally independent of each other except for interactions via ~/.ardour2.

The same problem solved using another app for unpacking the Ardour file. A little strange maybe !

Tanks so much to kimvarde and Han-earl Park.
Unpacking the Ardour .zip file with StuffIt Expander instead of default BOMArchiveHelper makes Ardour 2.8.1 application opening + working ok!
