Always goin' home

I wrote a song. Drums programmed with avl drums. The other instruments and voice played by myself.

Music: myself
Lyrics: from the internet

Comments are welcome. And I would also be happy to receive criticism on what I could do better in the mix

It reminds me of the seventies and artists like Steve Winwood, among others. I really enjoy this song. It has a familiar sound, but that’s irrelevant. Perhaps the singing could improve, if I may offer that suggestion. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for your comment

Yes, you’re right, the singing could be better. I’m a jazz pianist who tries to sing a little bit

You can play, that is talent :sunglasses:

Great playing and mix! Love those nice jazzy piano chords and punchy bass!

Don’t know about Steve Winwood, this piece reminds more of Billy Joel

Regarding the vocal performance I’d say, that you hit the notes quite good, but I’m missing the “emotion” and “expression”, because you seem to sing in kind of a “standard voice” only.
Try experimenting with your voice, e.g. try to add some vibrato or grit every now and then to put emphasis on the respective part of the lyrics.

Regarding the mix, I’d try out three things to (hopefully) improve things:

  • take out some low-mids (around 100-300Hz) from the bass and vocals using an EQ
  • try some compression on the vocals, which would reduce the loudness difference between “loud” and “quiet” sung parts. But don’t overdo it, because too much compression would most likely kill the mood of the song.
  • add an EQ on the master bus and boost the highs (I’d say, around 4kHz upwards) with a high shelf. This might add some brightness the song could need.

Regards.
