Adding directory for missing file: the pop-up window menu

hi,

I can imagine that these are the annoying details that have nothing to do with the sophisticated audio software… But still, when it comes to using Ardour, these also matter.

Namely, adding a directory where ardour should look for a missing file.
This function is underdeveloped.
It took me 40 minutes to realize that “recursively” was not mentioned.
I mean, to realize that we need to add the explicit directory under which the file resides.

suggestions 1:
The list of directories to be displayed in a “list” format, one under the other…
similarly to the bash command: instead of “ls” use “ls -l”…
one
under
the
other

it will make a difference already cause we’ll see it clearly which directory is missing, and also become aware, quickly, of the fact that Ardour does NOT search RECURSIVELY.

suggestion 2:

When we add a directory, it should be displayed in a full path format…
EDIT (additional explanation):
I imagine it like after you have selected the directory, it wouldn’t only display the immediate directory, like “audiofiles”, but the full path, too…
like “music_making/ardour8/project_2/interchange/audiofiles”

EDIT: suggestion 3 is not necessary at all…
(I’ll leave the original suggestion here for reference only)

suggestion 3: <<-- obsolete
I forgot
I don’t want to reproduce the missing file problem…
But I remember that in that radio button menu at least one option could be added…
OKAY, I got it: add the file manually (copy-paste its location)…
cause in this case, we copy the file (path) and can paste it quickly…
as opposed to going through directories, one by one, while looking at the path in a file manager window, to arrive at the exact location…

You are 100% correct. Application “polish” and universal ease of use is 1000% important. ~And it can make all the difference in the world, esp. for newcomers.

I suggest refining your ideas here and posting them over on Mantis where the devs keep better track of feature-requests, bugs, etc… As @paul mentions profusely, unfortunately to post over there you’ll have to create a separate login. But it might be worth it in the long run!

Thank you!
I will…
plus I’ve done an EDIT to this post (2 actually) with refinements…
