I’ve recently accidently updated wine, so when I tried to make music in ardour again I was greeted with the already-known bug where u cannot interact with your plugins.
I downgraded back to 9.21 with the downgrade package on arch in an attempt to fix this, rescanned plugins with yabridgectl, only for ardour to lead to errors when scanning my plugins. I’ve tried wine-cachyos, and the same results occured. This has not occured the last time I ran into this problem
Is it because I’m not properly downgrading my wine-mono package too? What version am I supposed to downgrade it to, if that’s the case.
I was sent here by the #ardour channel in libera chat. Thanks for reading, any kind of support is greatly appreciated.
Another workaround for newer wine versions is to enable the virtual desktop in winecfg and set it to something like 1024x768 or possibly higher.
It adds an ugly virtual desktop screen on your monitor, and I once managed to get the mouse pointer trapped inside of it, but it’s a workaround if you can’t downgrade to a workable version.
Your solution sounds appealing, though I am unable to replicate it. I enabled virtual desktop, and indeed when i relaunch winecfg it spawns a virtual window, so it’s working properly fosho. But the plugins in Ardour aren’t affected, strange. I’m sure ardour is using my system-wide installation of wine i switched versions and got different results, so I’m not sure.
Could you aid me with this solution? Because downgrading doesn’t seem to work for me. (I may also just not be downgrading the wine-mono package properly. when downgrading to wine-9.21, what wine-mono package should be installed alongside it-?)
Sorry, I was using winecfg on the wrong wine prefix, hence why the solution wasn’t working; It works! And it works better than I thought; I imagined that each plugin would have its own ugly window, but no; It’s just a random empty window i can hide and continue to use ardour like normal. Thanks!
No, honestly I actually have no idea.
And for what it’s worth I’m using a 1024x768 virtual wine desk in my 1980x1080 screen, so they don’t have to match in size.
I’m guessing the virtual desktop has to be at least the size of the plugin’s native screen size.
Because it didn’t work that well when I had a 800x600 virtual desk, which was smaller than the size of the plugin.
I wonder if I am the only one with the problem that all of the wine plugins do not show any graphics? It used to work, but now I can use the plugins only with generic controls. When I do a double click I only get an empty window with the size of the plugin, but it’s only black.
It’s wine-10.15, and yes, Windows plugins. I have the PluginAlliance SPL Finalizer, for which I didn’t find a comparable native substitute. None of the Windows plugins show any GUI.
I’m on Manjaro and Ardour 8.12 selfcompiled and the official binary from here and also Ardour 9.
Get the Win64 zip here Martin Lüders' VST site and install it in yabridge and see if it works.
If it does (it works for me in wine-10.something) it’s some issue with the Finalizer.
What is the SPL Finaliser, if you don’t mind me asking? What are the use cases? I was curious but couldn’t find anything online unfortunately.
Re: Wine - I tried the Win plugins via Wine thing a while ago because I wanted to use the (very good) Hornet plugins I had bought in the past and although the lack of of GUIs doesn’t bother me at all (I always use Ardour’s generic GUI with all plugs regardless), the whole thing with unpredictable Wine updates made it more trouble than it’s worth.
Also I found more than enough Linux-plugins for my needs and prefer to pay those devs / contribute to those projects instead of non-Linux stuff.
You don’t really need Wine mono to run Plugins, so if your package manager allows you can probably uninstall it. For my money 9.21 is still the way to go, that Virtual Desktop thing is pretty kludgy IMHO…
Okay, I’ve been trying the virtual desktop solution for the latest wine version, but it has major UX problems with some of my plugins (when trying to adjust the knobs.)
And when I use wine 9.21, all my plugins fail to load. Ardour simply crashes when its “loading track/bus master” when opening up a project.
back then I was using 9.21 and it worked fine, maybe ardour updated causing a new bug.
Please help I can’t make music :(((((
EDIT: I fixed it. I found the problem when I attempted to run winecfg, it complained about the recent downgrade and recommended to kill any old wineserver still running; That fixed everything. I’m sticking to 9.21, and leaving this here for anyone else who may need it.
I believe that issue was the whole reason I created this thread. So this comment should be considered the solution. AGAIN, remember to kill the wineserver (or just restart ur system) when u downgrade to 9.21. XD
