I cannot play sounds in other applications while Ardour is running. For example youtube videos, Audacity… and more.
That’s to be expected if you’re using the ALSA backend.
If you absolutely have to be able to use other audio programs at the same time that you’re recording or mixing in Ardour you need to use the JACK backend.
Which on recent distributions may be implemented by the pipewire-jack modules in pipewire.
You will have to check if your distribution is still using native PulseAudio, or is using pipewire-pulse, if the latter then adding pipewire-jack to enable the JACK API is likely the more straight forward way to go if you want any app to be able to work (since some applications do not have JACK API support, and pipewire can run ALSA library, PulseAudio, and JACK APIs simultaneously).
Once setup the distinction should not have many obvious differences between pipewire-jack and jackd, but the setup and configuration for each are considerably different, so you will need to investigate your distribution documentation (or ask on some distribution specific forums) to determine what is the best way for you.
And make sure your distribution is at leastr on Pipewire 0.3.81 which has the low-latency Jack changes and that you are using the “Pro” audio profile.
